Ponta de São Lourenço

A trail on the eastern tip of the island with unique landscapes and ocean views.

Ponta de São Lourenço, the easternmost point of the island of Madeira, is an unmissable place for anyone wishing to explore the east coast of the island. Nine kilometers long, this peninsula of volcanic origin is made up of the Ilhéu do Desembarcadouro (also known as the islet of Metade or Cevada) and the Ilhéu do Farol (islet of Ponta de São Lourenço or de Fora), which offer panoramic views over the north and south of the island.

Due to its semi-arid climate and exposure to north winds, the vegetation in Ponta de São Lourenço is low, without trees, providing a unique and imposing scenery, which contrasts with the rest of the island. It is for this reason that this place is classified as a Partial Nature Reserve, given the importance of its environmental heritage. Here you can find several rare plants and a diverse fauna, which includes several protected seabirds, such as the shearwater and the black soul. With any luck, it is possible to see sea lions.

The best way to explore the natural and scenic richness of this peninsula is through Vereda da Ponta de São Lourenço (PR8), a six-kilometre trail (round trip). During this route, it is possible to enjoy the breathtaking views of the cliffs and the sea, while observing the unique flora and fauna of this place. (Cost €1 - payment by QR Code on site)

In short, Ponta de São Lourenço is a unique tourist attraction in Madeira, offering incredible panoramic views and an incomparable natural and scenic richness. As such, it is a destination that visitors to the island cannot fail to explore.
