Fanal

An area of enchanting Laurissilva forest with century-old trees and natural lakes.

Located between the mountains of Seixal and Ribeira da Janela, Fanal is a large forest area that invites you to peacefully enjoy the best that Nature has to offer. This idyllic space is one of the most emblematic places in the municipality of Porto Moniz, with a landscape of great beauty.

In Fanal, the highlight is, without a doubt, the centenary forest of tis (Ocotea foetens) - these specimens date back to a time before the discovery of the archipelago - which form part of the indigenous Laurissilva forest, which here is expressed in a state of conservation which impresses with its liveliness.

Between viewpoints, a leisure space with a public barbecue and a winter pond that was born from an old crater, there are many natural corners in the Fanal Forest, in Madeira, where you can dazzle, have fun, walk or simply relax (this area is , incidentally, classified as a Reserve of Rest and Silence by the Natural Park of Madeira).

Here you will also find hiking trails that offer the opportunity to contemplate this vast and rich forest cover. You can start several trails and levadas in Fanal, such as the PR13 - Vereda do Fanal or the PR14 - Levada dos Cedros. Come and be surprised by the richness of Fanal.

Marked by the presence of a forest of centuries-old tilapia, Fanal is known for its mystical landscape. In this forested area, natural surprises multiply in every corner.
