Miradouro do Cristo Rei

A viewpoint with the iconic statue of Cristo Rei, offering panoramic views of the city of Caniço and the surrounding coastline.

The Garajau Partial Nature Reserve is a special place on the island of Madeira, where nature is exuberant and serene. Located in the parish of Caniço, the Miradouro do Cristo Rei offers a panoramic view over the natural heritage of Garajau, the bay of Funchal and Caniço de Baixo. It is also a privileged place to contemplate the Atlantic Ocean.

The Cristo Rei Viewpoint was named after the imposing statue of the Sacred Heart of Jesus that stands in this location. This majestic statue, inaugurated in 1927, marks the scenery of the viewpoint and is an important historical landmark in the region. The sculpture of Jesus Christ, with open arms, faces the Atlantic Ocean, creating an atmosphere of peace and serenity.

The statue was financed and built by councilor Aires de Ornelas, son of the last majorat of Caniço. The statue and the viewpoint are, therefore, an important testimony of the history of the region and one of the main tourist attractions in Caniço. The privileged view over the Garajau Partial Nature Reserve and the east coast of Madeira make this space a must-see for anyone visiting the island.

The Cristo Rei Viewpoint is located in Ponta do Garajau, one of the most impressive areas of the Garajau Partial Nature Reserve. This reserve is known for its exuberant biodiversity and clear waters, being a privileged place for the observation of marine species such as dolphins and turtles. It is a place of great interest for nature lovers and for all those looking for a peaceful and serene environment in which to relax.
