The Garajau Partial Nature Reserve is a special place on the island of Madeira, where nature is exuberant and serene. The Cristo Rei Viewpoint was named after the imposing statue of the Sacred Heart of Jesus that stands in this location. This majestic statue, inaugurated in 1927, marks the scenery of the viewpoint and is an important historical landmark in the region. The sculpture of Jesus Christ, with open arms, faces the Atlantic Ocean, creating an atmosphere of peace and serenity.
The statue was financed and built by councilor Aires de Ornelas, son of the last majorat of Caniço.
